Adams golf wedge12/21/2023 People probably think I work for them (I don't), but I HIGHLY recommend going to a physical 2nd Swing location if you are anywhere near one. Go with a brand that is known to be high quality and has for quite some time. Yes, some of these can be great clubs but some models will suck and why risk it. DON'T go for "2nd tier" type brands like Wilson or Top Flite or Strata or Adams. Stick to the big known brands - Taylormade, Titleist, Ping, Mizuno, Cobra, Callaway, Cleveland, etc. I suggest looking up the golf digest hot list in that category from different years and trying to grab old sets of those. Hell, Michael Block was gaming ~10 year old irons during the PGA Championship so realistically if the quality/tech is enough for someone at his level, they are going to be perfectly fine for someone even as they go from a 30 handicap all the way down to a 5.Īs a beginner, you need game improvement clubs. IMO until you get down close to scratch, a set that is less than ~18 years old will be plenty good enough if they are high enough quality. And the word significant is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. So how do you do that? The first thing to keep in mind is that, as a rule of thumb, golf tech improves enough to be significant every ~6 years. OR you can take the $500 and you can be much more picky about things, and get a set that will suit you for ~5+ years even as your game evolves. You can go the budget route, and spend $2-300 for a set that you will probably also grow out of. So if $500 is a lot to you, IMO you can go two routes. Something where, in a year or 2 I won't be eying something new. If $500 isn't a lot to you, they are probably a great starter set, but at that price point I'd prefer something that's a little more dynamic if that makes sense. They won't be fitted to you, and my guess is that most players will want different driver, woods and wedges after just a year or two if they are improving rapidly. ⁴The "easy" thing to do is to go out and buy a set of Callaway Edge clubs or something similar - that will cost you at least $500 and what I really don't like about it is that, IMO, you will "grow out" of these quickly despite them being new and shiny.
